A blower resistor is a component in a vehicle's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system that controls the speed of the blower fan. The blower fan circulates air through the vehicle’s cabin, and the resistor regulates the fan's speed by adjusting the electrical current flowing to the motor.
When you adjust the fan speed using the climate control settings in the car, the blower resistor steps down the voltage going to the blower motor. By controlling the voltage, the resistor changes the speed at which the fan operates. In most cars, the blower motor has multiple speed settings (low, medium, high), and the resistor helps facilitate these varying speeds.
A car blower resistor typically consists of a series of resistors that manage the power sent to the blower motor. It is commonly located near the blower motor, often behind the glove compartment or under the dashboard.
If the blower resistor fails, you may experience issues such as the blower motor not working on certain speeds (e.g., the fan only works on high speed), or it may stop working entirely. This can lead to problems with air circulation and temperature control inside the car.
