A Car Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor is a device used to measure the temperature of the gases exiting the engine through the exhaust system. It plays an important role in monitoring the health and performance of the engine, ensuring efficient combustion, and protecting key components such as the turbocharger and catalytic converter from potential damage due to excessive heat.
Function of an Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor:
The EGT sensor provides real-time data on the temperature of the exhaust gases to the engine control unit (ECU) or the vehicle’s diagnostic system.
This temperature data helps in adjusting the engine’s performance, ensuring that the fuel is being burned efficiently, and preventing the engine from running too hot.
In vehicles with turbochargers, the sensor helps monitor the exhaust temperature to avoid damage to the turbo, which can be sensitive to extreme heat.
It also helps monitor and optimize the performance of the catalytic converter by ensuring it operates within its ideal temperature range for reducing harmful emissions.
The EGT sensor usually operates using a thermocouple or a resistive temperature device. These sensors change their electrical resistance based on the temperature they are exposed to.
In thermocouple-based sensors, two different metal wires are joined at one end, and the temperature difference between the joined end (exposed to the exhaust gases) and the free end (connected to the ECU) generates a voltage that corresponds to the temperature.
The ECU processes this voltage signal to determine the exhaust gas temperature and take necessary action if required (e.g., adjusting the fuel mix or monitoring engine parameters).
The EGT sensor is typically located in the exhaust manifold, downpipe, or before/after the turbocharger in some vehicles. The exact placement depends on the vehicle's design and whether it has forced induction (like a turbo or supercharger).
For high-performance and turbocharged vehicles, there may be multiple sensors placed at different points in the exhaust system to monitor temperature in various stages of the exhaust flow.
Why is an EGT Sensor Important?
Preventing Turbocharger Damage: In turbocharged engines, exhaust gases are critical for driving the turbo. High exhaust gas temperatures can damage the turbo, so the EGT sensor helps keep track of the temperature to prevent overheating.
Protecting the Catalytic Converter: The catalytic converter works best within certain temperature ranges. If exhaust gases are too hot or too cold, the catalytic converter’s efficiency at reducing emissions could be compromised.
Monitoring Engine Efficiency: The sensor helps the ECU adjust the air-fuel mixture and other engine parameters, ensuring the engine runs at peak efficiency, preventing fuel wastage, and improving fuel economy.
Improved Emission Control: By maintaining proper exhaust gas temperatures, the EGT sensor aids in ensuring the vehicle meets emission regulations, reducing harmful pollutants.
Symptoms of a Faulty EGT Sensor:
Poor Fuel Efficiency: A malfunctioning sensor may lead to incorrect data being sent to the ECU, causing inefficient combustion and increased fuel consumption.
Check Engine Light: A failing EGT sensor often triggers the Check Engine Light on the dashboard.
Engine Overheating: Inaccurate temperature readings may prevent the ECU from adjusting parameters, potentially leading to engine overheating.
Reduced Engine Performance: Incorrect temperature readings could affect the overall engine performance, leading to rough idling, poor acceleration, or stalling.
Turbocharger or Catalytic Converter Damage: A faulty EGT sensor may fail to warn the system about dangerous exhaust temperatures, risking damage to the turbocharger or catalytic converter.
The Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor is a crucial component for maintaining engine efficiency, protecting turbochargers, ensuring optimal catalytic converter function, and preventing engine damage. By providing accurate exhaust temperature data to the ECU, it plays a key role in optimizing the vehicle's performance, emissions, and overall health.

Our story began in the 1980's. Back then we were just trading in limited commercial vehicle parts with a single store in Mumbai. Herculean brand powered by MantraTek was established later in the 20's by a team of technocrats with sound knowledge and experience of a decade in development and marketing of Automotive Products. Company which is involved in the manufacturing, distributing, importing, exporting and marketing of various high quality auto components which are available throughout India and also in international markets. Today, we are privileged to connect with millions of customers (directly/indirectly) with exceptional products and a number of dealers across the country. The company has established itself as the preferred supplier for many automotive components worldwide.
