Description

A brake pad sensor is a device used in modern vehicles to monitor the wear level of the brake pads. Its primary function is to alert the driver when the brake pads are getting too thin and need to be replaced. The brake pad sensor works by detecting the amount of material left on the brake pads and sends a signal to the vehicle's onboard computer or dashboard display.

Positioning: The sensor is usually attached to the brake pad or the brake caliper, in close contact with the pad's material.

Wear Detection: As the brake pads wear down over time, the sensor's contact changes. Once the brake pad wears down to a certain thickness, the sensor will either trigger an indicator light on the dashboard or send a warning message.

Types of Sensors:

Contact-based sensors: These sensors have a small metal tab that wears down with the brake pad. When the tab gets close to the rotor, it creates an electrical circuit that sends a warning signal.

Inductive sensors: These use electromagnetic principles to detect the distance between the sensor and the brake pad.

Warning Light: When the sensor detects low brake pad thickness, it triggers a dashboard warning light (typically a "brake pad" or "brake wear" light), indicating it's time to replace the pads before they cause damage to other braking components or compromise safety.

The brake pad sensor helps ensure that the vehicle’s braking system remains efficient and safe. It's especially important for maintaining braking performance and preventing unnecessary damage to the brake rotor.
