Car brake disc rotors are a crucial component of a vehicle's braking system. They are metal discs that are attached to the wheel hub and rotate with the wheel. When you apply the brakes, the brake pads clamp down on the rotors to create friction. This friction slows down or stops the wheel's rotation, which in turn slows down or stops the car.
These are the type of brakes that uses calipers to squeeze pads against the rotor to create friction which reduces its speed and ultimately slows down or stops the vehicle. When taking these brakes against drum brakes, disc brakes offers better stopping power and reduces the stopping distance. The disc brakes do not come with self-servo effect and the braking force is always in proportion to the pressure placed on the brake pedal. As a result, it gives a better feel to the driver and avoids impending lockups.
There are various types of rotors, including vented, slotted, and drilled, each designed to enhance performance in different driving conditions.
Over time, rotors can become worn or warped due to the constant friction and heat. Regular maintenance and inspections are important to ensure they remain in good condition. If they become too worn or damaged, they need to be resurfaced or replaced.
Good condition and proper functioning of the brake rotors are essential for safe and effective braking.
NOTE: Brake discs are typically replaced in pairs (front or rear) for several reasons related to vehicle safety, performance, and consistency.
Replacing brake discs in pairs helps maintain the integrity of the braking system, promotes even wear, and ensures safe and reliable braking performance.
