Description

A car oxygen sensor (often called an O2 sensor) is a vital component of a vehicle's exhaust system. It monitors the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases and helps the engine control unit (ECU) adjust the engine's air-fuel mixture for optimal performance.

The primary function of an oxygen sensor is to measure the level of oxygen in the exhaust gases produced by the engine after combustion. It sends this data to the engine's ECU, which uses the information to adjust the air-fuel mixture to ensure the engine operates efficiently.

Rich or Lean Mixture: The oxygen sensor detects whether the mixture is too rich (too much fuel relative to air) or too lean (too little fuel relative to air).

Engine Control: Based on the sensor's readings, the ECU adjusts fuel delivery to achieve the ideal air-fuel ratio (usually 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel for gasoline engines), optimizing fuel efficiency, power output, and reducing emissions.

How It Works:

Exhaust Gas Sampling: The oxygen sensor is typically located in the exhaust pipe or manifold, either before or after the catalytic converter.

Oxygen Measurement: The sensor contains a ceramic element that reacts to the oxygen content in the exhaust gases. When there is a high oxygen concentration (lean mixture), the sensor generates a high voltage. When there is low oxygen concentration (rich mixture), it generates a low voltage.

Data Sent to ECU: The voltage is sent to the ECU, which interprets it and adjusts the fuel injection and other engine parameters to ensure proper combustion.

Types of Oxygen Sensors:

Upstream (Pre-Catalytic Converter): Located before the catalytic converter, it helps the engine adjust the air-fuel mixture during combustion.

Downstream (Post-Catalytic Converter): Located after the catalytic converter, it monitors the efficiency of the catalytic converter by checking the oxygen levels in the exhaust gases after they've passed through it.

Importance of the Oxygen Sensor:

Fuel Efficiency: By ensuring the correct air-fuel mixture, the oxygen sensor helps the engine run at optimal efficiency, which can save fuel and reduce operational costs.

Reduced Emissions: Accurate oxygen readings help the ECU adjust the engine's performance, leading to lower emissions and helping vehicles comply with environmental regulations.

Engine Performance: A properly functioning oxygen sensor ensures the engine runs smoothly and efficiently, preventing poor acceleration, stalling, or rough idling.

Symptoms of a Faulty Oxygen Sensor:

If the oxygen sensor fails, the engine's air-fuel mixture may become unbalanced, leading to various issues:

Poor fuel efficiency

Increased exhaust emissions

Engine misfires or rough idling

Check engine light illuminated on the dashboard

Failed emissions test

The car oxygen sensor plays a crucial role in monitoring exhaust gases, ensuring proper fuel combustion, optimizing engine performance, improving fuel efficiency, and reducing harmful emissions.

Brand Description

Our story began in the 1980's. Back then we were just trading in limited commercial vehicle parts with a single store in Mumbai. Herculean brand powered by MantraTek was established later in the 20's by a team of technocrats with sound knowledge and experience of a decade in development and marketing of Automotive Products. Company which is involved in the manufacturing, distributing, importing, exporting and marketing of various high quality auto components which are available throughout India and also in international markets. Today, we are privileged to connect with millions of customers (directly/indirectly) with exceptional products and a number of dealers across the country. The company has established itself as the preferred supplier for many automotive components worldwide.
