Brake drums are typically used in rear brake systems of many vehicles, although some older or specialized vehicles may use them on the front as well.

A car drum brake is a type of automotive brake that uses friction caused by a set of shoes or pads that press against the brake drum. The term generally means a car brake in which shoes press on the inner surface of the drum and when it press outside of the drum, it is known as clasp brake.

These days several cars come with disc brakes at front and drum brakes at the rear. The auto drum brake comprises of more spare parts as compared to disc brakes and relatively harder to service.

Moreover, such brakes are easy to manufacture and can incorporate emergency braking mechanism easily.

The car drum brakes come with natural self-applying ability where drum rotation can drag one or both the shoes into the friction surface which causes brakes to bite harder and increases the force holding them together. As a result, braking power is increased without putting extra efforts by the driver. However, it makes harder to modulate the sensitivity of the brake.

Furthermore, it becomes more sensitive brake fade due to decreased brake friction and reduces the amount of brake assist as well.

NOTE: Brake Drums are typically replaced in pairs (front or rear) for several reasons related to vehicle safety, performance, and consistency.

Replacing Brake Drums in pairs helps maintain the integrity of the braking system, promotes even wear, and ensures safe and reliable braking performance.
