An intercooler, or chargeair cooler, is an airtoair or airtoliquid heat exchange device used on turbocharged and supercharged forced induction internal combustion engines to improve their volumetric efficiency by increasing intake aircharge density through isochoric cooling.
An intercooler is what is called a crossflow heat exchanger, as the cooling fluid removing the heat the air is moving at ninety degrees to the warm fluid the air, water or oil.
The intercooler is included in turbocharged vehicles for two reasons: the compressed air carries a lot of heat which can affect the engine parts by causing detonation in the cylinders, thereby lowering boost. The intercooler reduces the temperature of the air and protects the engine components. Secondly, compressed air when cooled becomes denser, which can, in turn, burn more fuel with it.
